Guide

Film, photography or both?

Film keeps the sound and movement of the day. Photographs give you prints and albums. Here is how to decide, and how booking both together works with me.

What film gives you

A film keeps what a photograph cannot: how your partner's voice caught in the vows, the joke in the best man's speech, the song you walked in to and the noise of the room when the band started. I record the vows and speeches on their own microphones and use music from the day itself, so the film sounds like your wedding.

What photographs give you

Photographs are the part of the day you hold. Prints for family, frames for the house and an album to pass round. A single still can also catch a moment more clearly than a few seconds of film.

Why book both together

  • One booking. One quote, one set of terms and one person to deal with from the first email.
  • No elbows. The second shooter and I have worked together for years. We know where the other one will be standing, so neither of us ends up in the other's shot.
  • One day, covered twice. While I film the speeches, the photographs keep coming.

If the budget means choosing one

Ask which you would miss more in twenty years. If it is the sound of the day, the vows and the speeches, choose film. If it is pictures on the wall and an album, choose photography. Your guests will take plenty of phone photographs; clear recordings of the vows and the speeches are much rarer.
